Raven and Evil Lady Horn Hat

This pattern is for personal use only, please do not copy, use or claim for your own  any of my photos, descriptions or wording.  Wearing this hat may cause uncontrollable urges to crinkle your nose, make an evil smirk with your mouth and give everyone that evil eye.  Consider yourself warned.

I was thinking about making the horns fatter, BUT I made a rockstar Twi'lek hat that has really long lekku and the weight of them make the hat a bit of a nuisance (not that it stops me from wearing it in public).  So, I went with horns like this, and I'm also glad that it makes it just a tad different than some other famous evil lady because I wanted this hat to be more personal....and I wasn't feeling 'wide' today.

I hope this makes sense to everyone, I haven't retested it, these are my notes from what I did yesterday afternoon.  If you have any questions, just let me know, I will do my best to clarify.  Also, I'd love to see your finished projects, if you are on Ravelry, please link them to this pattern, I get such a kick out of seeing everyone's creativity!  I promise I won't be offended if you change up my pattern and put your own twist to it, as I do the same thing to mostly every pattern! ;)

Materials
worsted weight black (I did not use a full skein, and I recommend red heart for, at least the horns and raven because they are stiffer and hold shape better) and grey, tapestry needle, fiberfill, h hook and g hook

Raven
  1. Magic ring, ch 1, 8 sc in ring; join (8 sc)

  23. ch 1 turn, sc in 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc (5 sc)
  24. ch 1, turn, sc in each sc (5 sc)
  25. repeat round 24
  26. ch 2, turn, dc in same sttich, ch 2, sl in next 2 stitches, ch 2, 2 dc in last stitch; finish off-you may sc around the outer edge of tail to keep it from curling-just put 3 sc in each point of the tail and instead of a sc put a sl st in the center of the points
Wings (make two)
1.          Ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 chains, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch
2.-4.      Turn, sc in sc, hdc in hdc, dc in next 3 dc, hdc in hdc, sc in sc

  2. ch 1, sc in each sc; join
  3. ch 1, 2 sc in sc, sc in 4 sc, 2 sc in sc (don't bother joining, we aren't really counting rounds now just count stitches)
  4. sc in 6 sc (you may add another round if you want a longer beak-leave a long tail for sewing.  When you attach your beak to the head, using the grey tail from beak, sew French knots for eyes.
Finger Holder
1.         ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 5 ch
2.-5.        ch 1, sc in each sc, then finish off and leave a tail for sewing.  Sew to under belly of raven for your finger to to into.

Hat  (this is a basic hat pattern-you can use whatever beanie pattern you like for the increase part so you get the sizing right-just be sure you pick one stitch, wherever you want the front of your hat to be a FPDC and then also, pay attention to the notations on round 14 as well as finishing after the ear flaps as those will give you that point in the front.-I am putting the size I used which gave me a 22" hat)
  1. with black, magic ring, ch 2 (counts as dc throughout), 9 dc in ring; join
  2. ch 2, dc in same dc, (2 dc in next dc) twice, dc in next dc, FPDC in SAME dc, (2dc in next dc) for the remaining dc (20)
  3. For the rest of the hat be sure to put a FPDC in the FPDC ch 2, *2dc in next dc, dc in next dc; repeat from * around; join (30dc)
  4. ch 2, dc in next dc, *2dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc; repeat from * around, join (40 dc)
  5. ch 2, dc in next 2 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc; repeat from * around, join (50 dc)
  6. ch 2, dc in each dc around but put an additional 5 increases (2 dc in the same stitch) (55 dc)
  7. dc in each dc around
  8. repeat round 7
  9. repeat round 7
  10. repeat round 7
  11. repeat round 7
  12. repeat round 7
  13. repeat round 7
  14. find the FPDC, count (to the right) four stitches, place marker-ch 1, sc in same dc and remaining dc up until marker-then place, hdc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 dc, FPTDC in FPDC, dc in next 2 dc, hdc in next 2 dc, sc in remaining dc; join with sl st to first dc, finish off
Ear Flaps
Fold the hat exactly  in half with the FPDC rounds in the very center front.  Place a stitch marker in each corner.  You will be starting an ear flap at each of these stitch markers (one on will start on the right side the other will start on the wrong side-both are to be worked toward the back of the hat).  If you want to make your ear flaps longer and then put a button on them so they join under your chin, please do so, I don't like that personally as I feel like I am gagging.
1.     Starting at stitch  marker, Sc in 12 sc
2.     Ch 1, turn, sc in 12 sc
3.     Turn, skip first sc, sc in 11 sc
4.     Turn, skip first sc, sc in 10 sc
5.     Turn, skip first sc, sc in 9 sc
6.     Turn, skip first sc, sc in 8 sc
7.     Turn, skip first sc, sc in 7 sc
8.     Turn, skip first sc, sc in 6 sc
9.     Turn, skip first sc, sc in 5 sc
10.  Turn, skip first sc, sc in 4 sc
11.  Turn, skip first sc, sc in 3 sc; finish off
Finishing, sc around the  outer edge of hat and ear flaps. When you get to the front of the hat be sure to place Hdc in hdc, dc in dc and (FPTDC, picot) in FPDC.  Join and finish off
Horns (make 2)
For the horns we are not going to be counting rows or keeping track of rounds.  Rather, I have just numbered this into ‘steps’ so it is easier to follow.
1.     Magic ring, ch 1, 4 sc in ring, join (this is the only joining you will have for horns-as mentioned above
2.     Sc in 4 sc
3.     Sc in 4 sc
4.     2 sc in next sc, sc in sc, dec, sc in sc
5.     2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next sc, dec, sc in next 4 sc
6.     2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, dec
7.     Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc
8.     Sc in next 9 sc, (dec) twice, sc in sc
9.     2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc
10.  Dec, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc
11.  Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 10 sc
12.  Dec, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc
13.  Dec, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc
14.  Dec, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc
15.  2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, dec, sc in next 4 sc
16.  2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, dec
17.  Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc
18.  (sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) ten times total
19.  Sc in 50 sc
20.  Dec, sc in next sc, dec, sc in next sc, dec
21.  Sc in next 7 sc, (2 sc in next sc) twice
22.  Sc in next 6 sc, dec, sc in next sc, dec
23.  Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc

24.  Sc in next 20 sc; finish off leaving a long tail for sewing

lightly stuff horns and attach to top of hat.

  1. Dragonbird, this is Softywares. This little birdy is fabulous, and the hat is pretty great too. I have been a big fan of Dead Crow Hat; it's in my Ravelry library. I plan to make this bird, but he'll be wearing boots, or maybe sneakers. Regards.

    1. ;) I have a few projects that I still need to finish as well...My problem is that once I start something new the old one begins is death spiral....Good luck on all you have on your plate! :) I'm very excited about the new movie coming out. Sleeping Beauty was always my favorite as a kid and Maleficent was always the baddest of the bad. ;) You gotta love evil when it's done right.

    1. Front Post Triple Double Crochet....It means you will put your hook behind and then around the post (instead of into the top loop) indicated, and then complete a TDC as you normally would.

    2. Ok. I know how to find a double triple crochet. Have to find tutorial for triple double crochet.

    3. Pretty sure it is the same thing-basically it is just like a dc you just YO twice and work it off an extra time.

    1. Aww that is too sweet! Maleficent was always my favorite of all the evil ones. :) My son used to dress up like her when he was a wee little guy. :) You may need to modify the hat a little to fit a smaller head though-this one is about 21" when complete-if you obtain my gauge, every 2.5 stitches is about an inch so you could omit a few increases based on that...

  5. This is totally adorable. I'll have to make it.

Oh, btw, what is the name of the font in the heading of your post? Thanks.

    1. Glad you like it! :) I'm not sure which font you are talking about? The very top one is called Crafty Girls (available as a choice on this site) and the little bolder parts of the actual pattern are Janda Apple Cobbler (which I downloaded from DaFont).

    2. Janda Apple Cobbler - that's it! I like the other one, too, but I've got one almost like that.
